Bridging the Legacy of Braun to Teenage Engineering

Published: 04.07.2024

At Config 2024, we had the privilege of delving into the innovative world of Teenage Engineering, a company that has redefined how we interact with music through its unique gadgets.

This experience felt like a natural progression from the iconic designs of Braun’s audio devices, renowned for their minimalist elegance under Dieter Rams’ vision. Just as Rams’ creations epitomized functional beauty, Teenage Engineering’s instruments, like the OP-1 and the TP-7, embody a modern interpretation of nostalgia, blending aesthetic simplicity with cutting-edge functionality. These instruments are not merely tools but embodiments of a design philosophy that values creativity within constraints.

Highlights from the Talk with Jesper Kouthoofd

The conversation with Jesper Kouthoofd at Config 2024 was a treasure trove of insights and inspirations. Jesper, the visionary designer behind Teenage Engineering’s groundbreaking products and the acclaimed Nothing phone, shared his journey, philosophy, and the creative processes that drive his work.

Jesper’s reflections on his early encounters with technology and design were particularly resonant. He shared how his first computer, a CX881 with just 1K ROM memory, taught him the value of creativity within limitations. "Limitations actually spark your creativity," he emphasized, a philosophy that clearly influences Teenage Engineering’s innovative designs. This perspective is evident in the way Teenage Engineering products, such as the OP-1 and the TP-7, encourage users to explore their creative boundaries within the device's designed constraints.

The story behind the OP-1 and TP-7

Jesper’s journey from graphic design to directing, and eventually to creating the OP-1, was driven by a desire to merge creativity with practicality. He recounted how the OP-1 was inspired by the music equipment he borrowed from his brother’s store as a teenager. "If you look at the OP-1, it’s actually exactly those parts that I borrowed from my brother’s store," he explained, highlighting the personal connection and historical continuity in his work. The OP-1 and its successor, the OP-Z, have revolutionized portable music production with their intuitive interfaces and compact form factors.

A particularly memorable part of the talk was Jesper’s thoughts on the TP-7, Teenage Engineering’s latest marvel. The TP-7’s sleek, minimalistic design pays homage to classic audio devices while introducing a fresh, modern twist. Its rotating disk transforms the act of playing and recording music into a tactile, almost ritualistic experience. The forward, backward, and side buttons are intuitively placed, enhancing the device’s usability without compromising its aesthetic integrity. The TP-7’s small display with a pixel font adds to its charm, offering a perfect blend of retro and contemporary design elements. The haptic feedback of the buttons further enriches the user experience, making every interaction with the device a delight.

Another fascinating highlight was Jesper’s approach to collaboration and hiring at Teenage Engineering. He described how he often hires people based on their vibe and potential rather than their immediate fit. "I can hire people just if I see they have something," he mentioned, underscoring his belief in nurturing creativity within a supportive and dynamic environment.

Jesper also shared insights into his role in the design of the Nothing phone, a project that exemplifies his commitment to blending form and function. The Nothing phone is renowned for its minimalist design and transparent elements, reflecting Jesper’s philosophy of making consumer electronics exciting again. He emphasized, "We need to be partners, we need to be friends," when discussing the collaboration with Carl Pei, the co-founder of Nothing.
