The legacy of Dieter Rams
The identity of BRAUN was shaped for almost 40 years by the team around the head of product design Dieter Rams. His sentences "Good design is invisible" and "Less, but better" more than clearly describe the objective of meaningful product design. Dieter Rams implemented his design rules over the course of three decades as head of design at Braun, which was incremental in Braun becoming a globally renowned brand. His 10 rules of good design has influenced subsequent generations of industrial designers including Jonathan Ive at Apple. Designers at Braun (including names such as Hans Gugelot, Reinhold Weiss or Dietrich Lubs next to Dieter Rams) have succeeded in developing timeless, highly functional and durable products that were clean in their aesthetics. The company was founded in 1921 by Max Braun in Frankfurt a. Main. From 1929 to 1990, Braun produced audio equipment, and since the early 1950s added household appliances, personal care products, photo and film cameras, lighters, and watches. Since 1951, when brothers Artur and Erwin Braun joined the company, Braun has started to become a pioneer of product design in Germany and worldwide. At an early stage, renowned designers such as Hans Gugelot and Otl Aicher from the environment of the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm were integrated into the company. Product design developed into a key strategic corporate objective for Braun. (source)
